ABBEVILLE CATHEDRAL

£39.50

Original 1850 6 1/4 inch x 4 1/2 inch engraving titled ABBEVILLE CATHEDRAL.

Construction of Abbeville Cathedral (Collégiale Saint Vulfran) began in 1488, and is a masterpiece of Flamboyant Gothic art in Northern France. Its frontage is remarkable: rose window, gallery, Renaissance statues, two symmetrical towers just over 55m high topped by two lookout turrets. The central doorway is a fabulous witness to the work of the Picardy chestmakers illustrated by Renaissance doors. It was only in the 17th century that the nave was completed in Gothic style. The interior features a remarkable 17th century Last Judgement altarpiece and stained-glass windows by William Einten, of religious or biblical inspiration.

Engraved by Albert Henry Payne (1812 – 1902). Painter, etcher and publisher; born in London, worked in Leipzig from 1838. In 1845 Albert Henry Payne became a citizen of Leipzig, where he founded the publishing company “Englische Kunstanstalt”.

From Payne’s Universum, or Pictorial World’ published by Brain & Payne, 12 Paternoster Row, London.
