The forest rangers spend their life guarding an isolated powder-magazine high amongst the screes, in the shadow of the sheer rock-faces. Barnabo is just over twenty when he joins the Forestry Service and the old Commander, Del Colle, looks on him as a son. The forest rangers lead a simple, humdrum existence and one day is very like another. the memory of the war and Darrio, possibly the bravest of them all, mysteriously killed by smugglers is still fresh in their minds. One day, Del Colle is also found shot. The murderers must be hunted down, The Commander avenged….
