Vintage restrike 6 3/8 inch x 9 3/4 inch engraving titled JOANNES BROWNE REGIUS CHIRURGUS ORDINARIUS.

Portrait of John Browne, aged 39, bust in an oval frame on a pedestal, wearing wig and cravat; coat of arms below; used as frontispiece to Browne’s ‘Compleat Treatise of the Muscles as they appear in Humane Body’ .

John Browne (1642–1702) was an English anatomist, surgeon and author. He published the first description of cirrhosis of the liver in 1685 and the first description of necrotising pancreatitis in 1684. He was also known for publishing the work of others under his name.

Print by Robert White (1645 – 1703). An English draughtsman and engraver. A Londoner, he was a pupil of David Loggan, and became a leading portrait engraver. His earliest print was made in 1666, and his last in 1702. His output was huge, and has never been fully catalogued. White was celebrated for his original portraits, drawn in pencil on vellum in the manner of Loggan. He died in reduced circumstances in Bloomsbury Market, where he had long resided, in November 1703.
