Portrait of John Knox, half-length, slightly turned to the left, standing at a table with a pair of compasses in his hand, dressed in an academic gown with a Canterbury cap on his head and a ruff about his neck, with an ornate border, illustration to the 8 volume edition of Lodge’s ‘Portraits’ (1836).
Print by Henry Thomas Ryall (1811 – 1867). An eminent nineteenth-century line, stipple and mixed-method engraver, Henry Thomas Ryall was known for his portraits and his sporting, historical and genre subjects. After studying engraving techniques under Samuel William Reynolds, Ryall lived and worked in London. Ryall was appointed historical engraver to the queen, in which capacity he engraved the portraits of many members of the royal family.
