Original 1942 10 inch x 7 1/2 inch Silver Gelatin Print of JOYCE GRENFELL (1910 – 1979). Toothy comedienne of British stage and screen. A former journalist and radio critic of The Observer, she made her stage debut in 1939, presenting her own monologuesi n a London revue, and her first film appearance in 1943 in The Demi-Paradise. In the late 1950s and early 1960s she toured the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries in a one-woman show that enjoyed great popularity. She also performed frequently on British radio and TV and in 1957 was elected president of England’s Society of Women Writers and Journalists.

Portrait by Photographer Angus McBean (1904 – 1990). Angus McBean was in Newbridge, Monmouthshire. He studied at Newport, and started as a full-time theatrical photographer in 1934, becoming noted for his individual approach to portraiture.

The portrait, on heavyweight paper. is in very good condition with minor corner creasing and some surface lines.

The snipe on the reverse advertises Grenfell joining the cast of Herbert Farjeon’s Light and Shade at the Ambassadors Theatre in London.
