Natural history expert and popular television personality Robert Wilcot (Ian Carmichael), is Conservative candidate for the provincial town of Earndale in the upcoming by-election and finds himself up against Billingsgate girl Stella Stoker campaigning for the Labour Party. The supporting honours are however stolen by Alastair Sim as the lord of the manor who couldn’t give a toss about who wins the election but who cares very deeply about making a financial killing from it.
