Original British 10 inch x 8 inch Portrait of JILL BALCON as Madeline Bray and SALLY ANN HOWES as Kate Nickleby in the 1947 Alberto Cavalcanti Ealing Studios Drama NICHOLAS NICKLEBY, based on the novel by Charles Dickens.
The portrait is by FELIX FONTEYN. Felix Fonteyn, born Felix Hookham, was the brother of ballerina Margot Fonteyn, born Margret Hookham and it was she that suggested he changed his name to Fonteyn. He was an active photographer during the 1940s and 1950s, with Augustus John and Peter Ustinov amongst his sitters.
Jill Balcon was the daughter of Michael Balcon, head of production at Ealing Studios. She was married to the poet laureate Cecil Day-Lewis, who as Nicholas Blake wrote several mystery novels and movie scripts. Their son is Daniel Day-Lewis
The portrait is in fine condition on matte heavyweight paper with the photographer’s stamp on the reverse.
