Original 1878 9 inch x 7 1/4 inch engraving titled PHILOSOPHY AND ART
The work engraved here shows a young female exhibiting a painting of the ‘Holy Family’ to a venerable and learned man engaged at the time in searching a volume the pages of which are headed “Science” and “Mechanics”, the latter having geometrical figures on it.
Engraved by William Ridgway (1830 – 1900). Engraver.
From the painting “Philosophy and Christian Art” by Daniel Huntington (1816 – 1906). Portrait and genre painter. Born in New York, he studied in Rome, for a while, under G.P. Ferrero. Twice President of the National Academy from 1862 to 1869 and 1877 to 1891, Huntington was also Vice President of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, from 1870 to 1903.
