Original 20 inch x 11 7/8 inch Engraving titled THE RETURN FROM THE DERBY – A ROADSIDE SKETCH AT CLAPHAM.
Illustration by John Gordon Thomson (1841 – 1911). Comic draughtsman on wood and figure artist. Born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, he moved to London, aged 20, to work as a civil servant. He contributed to Punch from 1891, the Graphic, 1870, moving to the periodical, Fun, the same year, where he contributed political cartoons, especially of Disraeli and Gladstone. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1878 and illustrated books and magazines for Samuel Beeton.

The Graphic was a British weekly illustrated newspaper, first published on 4 December 1869 by William Luson Thomas’s company Illustrated Newspapers Limited. It continued to be published weekly under this title until 23 April 1932 and then changed title to The National Graphic between 28 April and 14 July 1932; it then ceased publication, after 3,266 issues.
