RING OF SPIES

£79.50

Original 9 1/4 inch x 7 1/2 inch Still of actors WILLIAM SYLVESTER as Gordon Lonsdale, HECTOR ROSS, producer LESLIE GILLIAT listening to DETECTIVE SUPERINTENDENT GEORGE ‘MOONRAKER’ SMITH (who arrested the real life spies) on location at Waterloo Station for the 1964 Robert Tronson Drama RING OF SPIES.

”The Portland Spy Ring was a Soviet spy ring that operated in England from the late 1950s till 1961 when the core of the network was arrested by the British security services. It is one of the most famous examples of the use of illegal residents — spies who operate in a foreign country but without the cover of their embassy. Its members included Harry Houghton, Ethel Gee, Gordon Lonsdale and Morris and Lona Cohen.

On Saturday 7 January 1961, Houghton, Gee and Lonsdale were meeting in London when they were arrested by Special Branch detective Detective Superintendent George Gordon Smith — as MI5 officers are not authorised to make arrests.”
