Original Polish 23 inch x 33 inch Poster for the 1961 Andrzej Wajda Drama SAMSON, based on the novel by Kazimierz Brandys and starring Serge Merlin, Alina Janowska, Elzbieta Kepinska, Jan Ciecierski and Tadeusz Bartosik.
Andrzej Wajda’s early films analyze a highly traditional and proud people coming to terms with an alien ideology. Samson is the study of one such alien, a hunted Jew, escaping from the Ghetto during the Occupation. Starowieyski’s poster of the collapsing wall symbolizes both Wajda’s reworking of the Biblical story and the razing of the Warsaw Ghetto.

Franciszek Starowieyski was a painter, illustrator, printmaker, poster artist, theatre and TV set designer dividing his time between the ateliers of Warsaw and Paris, making some 300 posters and earning the name of one of the finest representatives of the Polish school of posters.
The poster is in good unfolded (rolled) condition with a 3 inch tear and a nick in the right edge. There is tape strengthening on the reverse.
