Scene in an artist’s studio, with a young painter standing behind an easel, painting the portrait of Samuel Pepys’s wife, seated sideways on a chair on a podium in foreground at left; Pepys seated on a stool at right, conversing with a young woman, reading the manuscript of his diary, another woman reading over her shoulder.
Lettered below image with title: “From the Collection of John Dillon, Esq. Craven Hill”.
Engraving by Samuel S. Smith (1810 – 1879). Engraver.
After Alfred Elmore (1815 – 1881). Born in County Cork Elmore was a history and genre painter.
