A NIGHT IN VENICE

£1,800.00

Original Austrian 48 3/4 inch x 110 1/4 inch 3-Sheet poster for the 1934 Robert Wiene German/Hungarian Romantic Comedy A NIGHT IN VENICE (EINE NACHT IN VENEDIG), loosely based on the 1883 operetta “Eine Nacht in Venedig” by Johann Strauss II and starring Tino Pattiera, Tina Eilers, Ludwig Stossel, Oskar Sima, Lici Balla, Fritz Fischer and Ella Gombaszögi.

Robert Wiene is known mainly for directing the German silent film “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” and a succession of other expressionist films. Four months after the Nazis took power, Wiene’s latest film, “Taifun”, was banned on 3 May 1933. A Hungarian film company had been inviting German directors to come to Budapest to make films in simultaneous German/Hungarian versions, and given his uncertain career prospects under the new German regime Wiene took up that offer in September to direct “Eine Nacht in Venedig” (1934). Wiene later went to London, and finally to Paris where together with Jean Cocteau he tried to produce a sound remake of “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.”

The poster was originally in 3 separate sheets but 2 of the sheets have been glued together, otherwise it is in very good folded condition.
