Original 1956 British 40 inch x 25 inch Poster for ”AMID THE GROVES UNDER THE SHADOWY HILLS”.
Poster art by Barnett Freedman (1901 – 1958). Born in Stepney, East London, the son of Russian Jews, he worked as a signwriter and as a stonemason’s and architect’s assistant while attending night classes at St. Martin’s School of Art. He then studied at the Royal College of Art. A pioneer in the revival of colour lithography, he illustrated numerous literary works as well as designing publicity material for Shell, the BBC and the GPO. In 1935 his work was included in the British Art in Industry exhibition at the Royal Academy, and his desgn was chosen for the George V Jubilee postage stamp. He was an official war artist from 1941 to 1946, with the army in France and then the Royal Navy on the battleship Repulse on arctic convoys to Russia. He designed the laurel leaf logo for Ealing Studios and was made a Royal Designer for Industry in 1949. His death in 1958 was commemorated with an exhibition at the Arts Council.
