Rank flirted with a series of German actors in the 1950s, and achieved particular success with Horst Buchholz in Tiger Bay and Hardy Kruger in The One That Got Away. This is Kruger’s follow-up to his hit, a rather charming romantic comedy, lovingly photographed on Cambridge locations by the great cameraman Geoffrey Unsworth, directed by the talented Wolf Rilla, and aided by a lovely performance from co-star Sylvia Syms. Today these gauche student antics look a little daft, but they are neatly depicted here by a pair of young screenwriters who have since become much more famous: Leslie Bricusse, distinguished co-writer of Stop the World I Want to Get Off, and Frederic Raphael, who collected an Oscar for Darling and worked on the Stanley Kubrick sizzler Eyes Wide Shut.
