Original 1836 8 1/2 inch x 6 3/4 inch etching and engraving titled THE BATTLE OF BOTHWELL BRIDGE
Depicts the government and Covenanting armies meeting at the Battle of Bothwell Bridge, June 22, 1679.
View of a battle, with two soldiers firing a cannon in foreground at centre left, and a commander on horseback pointing with his sword to right, while turning in the saddle towards cavalrymen wearing armour, and footsoldiers in highland dress at far left; row of soldiers firing rifles, advancing to right behind him; ruined towers in middle ground at centre.
Engraved by James Baylis Allen (1803 – 1876). English landscape engraver and artist. Principally known for a wide variety of landscape engravings after the leading topographical artists of the day. Born in Birmingham, the son of Joseph Allen, a button manufacturer, and his wife Elizabeth. He was apprenticed to his elder brother Josiah, a general engraver, in about 1818. Exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1833. He died in Camden Town on the 11th January 1876 and was buried in Highgate Cemetery.
