BRIEF ENCOUNTER

£79.50

Original British 11 inch x 17 inch Trade Advertisement from Kinematograph Weekly for the 1945 David Lean Romantic Drama BRIEF ENCOUNTER, based on the one-act play “Still Life” by Noël Coward and starring Celia Johnson, Trevor Howard, Stanley Holloway, Joyce Carey and Cyril Raymond.

After a chance meeting on a train platform, a married doctor (Trevor Howard) and a suburban housewife (Celia Johnson) begin a muted but passionate, and ultimately doomed, love affair. With its evocatively fog-enshrouded setting, swooning Rachmaninoff score, and pair of remarkable performances (Johnson was nominated for an Oscar), this film deftly explores the thrill, pain, and tenderness of an illicit romance, and has influenced many a cinematic brief encounter since its release.

Trade advertisements are colourful posters aimed at cinema managers, which were either slipped in, or part of, the weekly film trade journals which were available to them by subscription but were not sold to the general public. Most were designed to be pulled out, and some were attached by staples. Most have the date in tiny letters in one of the top corners.
