Original 1668 16 1/2 inch x 21 inch Etching and Engraving titled CHRIST IN THE SEPULCHRE SUPPORTED BY ANGELS
Print by Nicolas Pitau (1670–1724). A Flemish-born French engraver and printmaker.
From the painting by Ludovico Carracci (1555 – 1619). An Italian, early-Baroque painter, etcher, and printmaker born in Bologna. His works are characterized by a strong mood invoked by broad gestures and flickering light that create spiritual emotion and are credited with reinvigorating Italian art, especially fresco art, which was subsumed with formalistic Mannerism.
Inscription: Lettered bottom left: “Ex tabula Ludovici Carracii manu/ depicta apud Raphaelem du Fresne. / Quis talia cernens temperet a lacrymis./ Tabulam in ære expressit/ N. Pitau Belga.’”
The etching is in very good condition with general age-related toning and minor defects from handling. It is tacked to thicker paper
