CO-OPTIMISTS

£99.50

Original 10 inch x 8 inch Portrait of PHYLLIS MONKMAN in the 1929 Edwin Greenwood Musical THE CO-OPTIMISTS.

The Co-Optimists concert party in performance.

Phyllis Monkman (1892 – 1976) was an actress, dancer and singer. She began as a teenager, achieving success in Butterflies (1908). After many appearances in revues, notably Bubbly (1917), and Tails Up! (1918) in which she sang Ivor Novello’s ‘Any Little Thing’ with Jack Buchanan, Monkman was one of the founders in 1921 of the ‘Co-Optimists’ ‘pierrotic’ concert party, in which she appeared on and off for several years with her husband, Laddie Cliff. Noël Coward cast her in his musical play Operette (1938), and Ivor Novello wrote a part for her in The Sunshine Sisters (1933).

The portrait, on doubleweight paper, is in very good condition with a tiny crease in the top border.
