Portrait of Galileo, bust, facing front, wearing a doublet. Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) was one of the greatest scientists of all time. He discovered Jupiter’s moons and the laws governing falling bodies.
After Justus Sustermans (1597 – 1681).
Sustermans is chiefly notable for his portraits of members of the Medici family as he was their court painter. His work can be found in both the Palatina Gallery and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, and in many other galleries around the globe. During his lifetime he was fêted as the finest portrait painter in Italy.
Print by Galgano Cipriani (1775 – c.1857).
Having studied under Raphael Morghen, he engraved a number of reproductions of Italian masters.
