Lean won his first director-credit co-directing with Coward who had no experience in making films and who asked for the best techinician around. Lean’s expertise as an editor helped to make the film Coward’s finest hour in the movies, as star, writer, co-director, co-producer and composer of this stirring tribute to the navy. British fighting spirit, and particularly Louis Mountbatten and the men of the torpedoed HMS Kelly, on whose story the film is based. It is beautifully crafted in all departments, and Coward won a special Oscar for production achievemnet.
