Born in Hove, Sussex in 1900, Edna Best was a gentle romantic lead, then character player of British and American films. She made her London Stage debut at 17 in ‘Charley’s Aunt’ and enjoyed her greatest success in ‘The Constant Nymph’ in 1926. In 1928 she married Herbert Marshall. They appeared together in a number of plays in London and New York before their divorce in 1940. On the British screen from 1921, she went to Hollywood in 1939 and became an American citizen in 1950. She died in 1974.
