OUTCAST OF THE ISLANDS

Original British 11 inch x 8 1/2 inch Trade Advertisement from Kinematograph Weekly for the 1951 Carol Reed Adventure OUTCAST OF THE ISLANDS, based on the novel by Joseph Conrad and starring Wendy Hiller, Ralph Richardson, Trevor Howard, Robert Morley, George Coulouris and Kerima.

A man occupies a position of trust with a merchant in an East Asian port. He’s sacked after he’s caught stealing, but he pretends to commit suicide, and a Captain he befriended agrees to take him to a secret trading post.

The poster art is by Brian Robb (1913 – 1979). Brian Robb was born in Scarborough, educated at Malvern College and studied at Chelsea School of Art from 1930, and at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1935. He went on to produce cartoons for Punch magazine, book illustrations and posters for Shell and London Transport. During World War II he was a creative camouflage officer in the Western Desert and after the war taught at Chelsea College of Art before becoming head of illustration at the Royal College of Art.
