PRINCE OF PLAYERS

Original British 30 inch x 40 inch Quad Poster for the 1955 Philip Dunne Biographical Drama PRINCE OF PLAYERS, based on the book by Eleanor Ruggles and starring Richard Burton as Edwin Booth, Maggie McNamara, John Derek as John Wilkes Booth, Raymond Massey, Charles Bickford, Elizabeth Sellars and Eva Le Gallienne.

The film is about the early career of the 19th century American actor, Edwin Booth and also includes the events leading to the assassination of President Lincoln by Edwin’s brother, John Wilkes Booth. In the film, Edwin’s days in the spotlight dwindle shortly after his brother is caught and killed for assassinating Lincoln.

The poster artwork is by A. “Jock” W. Hinchliffe.
Hinchliffe was born in Perth, Scotland. In 1953 he had a studio in Chalk Farm, North London, where he produced a series of six oil paintings as publicity for 20th Century Fox’s “The Robe”. He had been engaged by Fox in 1926 and produced posters and ads continuously for them, and for Disney, well into the 1960s.
