ROMEO AND JULIET

£75.00

Original 1885 9 inch x 6 1/8 inch engraving titled ”Farewell, farewell! One kiss, and I’ll descend!”.

From the drawing by Frank Bernard Dicksee (1853 – 1928). British painter, the best-known member of a family of artists. He specialized in romantic historical scenes (often from his own imagination rather than based on a particular event or literary source) and—in the later part of his career—portraits; he also occasionally produced scenes of modern social drama.

In the 1880s he provided illustrations for a luxury edition of Romeo and Juliet. This one depicts the end of the famous balcony scene and Romeo’s line ‘Farewell, farewell, one kiss and I’ll descend’. It reflects the drift from the intensity of the Pre-Raphaelite vision towards late Victorian sentimentality.

Print size 8 3/4 inch x 12 inch

From ‘The Magazine of Art’ Vol. VIII. 1885. Published by Cassell & Company Ltd. – London, Paris, New York & Melbourne.
