TONKA

Original British 30 inch x 40 inch Quad Poster for the 1958 Lewis R. Foster Walt Disney Western TONKA, based on the book ‘Comanche: Story of America’s Most Heroic Horse’ by David Appel and starring Sal Mineo, Jerome Courtland, Philip Carey, Rafael Campos and Britt Lomond as General George Armstrong Custer.

Mineo gets a useful role in Disney’s junior Western about an Indian boy White Bull who loves a white stallion called Comanche, a passion shared by Captain Carey. The horse is sold to General Custer (Lomond) and is the sole survivor at Custer’s Last Stand.

The poster artwork is by A. “Jock” W. Hinchliffe.
Hinchliffe was born in Perth, Scotland. In 1953 he had a studio in Chalk Farm, North London, where he produced a series of six oil paintings as publicity for 20th Century Fox’s “The Robe”. He had been engaged by Fox in 1926 and produced posters and ads continuously for them, and for Disney, well into the 1960s.
