Jackson won her first Oscar for her part as Gudrun in Russell’s succesful transition of D.H. Lawrence’s novel. Excellent work from Jackson and Linden as the modern-thinking 20s Brangwen sisters who enjoy stormy affairs with rich, tough Reed and school inspector Bates. Around this splendid central quartet of performances, Russell elivens things by encouraging broad turns from dilitante Bron and German sculptor Sheybal. Russell’s on very sure ground with the emotional basis of the film and the period atmosphere of the Midland mining village. The men’s naked wrestling in the firelight ensured its box-office success.
