Original British 11 inch x 17 inch Trade Advertisement from Kinematograph Weekly for the 1944 Phil Rosen Charlie Chan Mystery BLACK MAGIC, based on characters created by Earl Derr Biggers and starring Sidney Toler, Mantan Moreland, Frances Chan, Joseph Crehan, Helen Beverly, Jacqueline deWit, Geraldine Wall, Ralph Peters, Frank Jaquet, Edward Earle, Claudia Dell, Harry Depp, Charles Jordan, Dick Gordon and Darby Jones.

Charlie searches for a murderer amidst numerous ghosts conjured up by a strange variety of spiritualists and occultists.

Advert art by Mervyn Peake (1911 – 1968). Mervyn Peake was an English novelist, poet, painter, playwright, and illustrator, best known for the bizarre Gormenghast trilogy of novels and for his illustrations of his novels and of children’s stories. Educated in China and in Kent, England, Peake went to art school and trained as a painter, but he was stricken with a progressive illness that made him increasingly helpless until his death.
