Michael Balcon had wanted to make a film about the police’s work in 1939, but the Metropiltan Police, when asked to discuss the project, delivered a crushing snub. A decade later, their co-operation was very full. Alexander Mackendrick directed the second unit, shooting the car scenes on location.
