The image focuses on the dramatic moment that Mary Queen of Scots learns her death warrant has been signed by Queen Elizabeth I, and Mary’s contained response contrasts with the visible distress of her waiting women, both precipitated by the arrival of the Earls of Shrewsbury and Kent, Sir Arthur Melville and a sheriff.
Engraved by Doris Raab (1851 – 1933). A German etcher and engraver.
From the painting by Karl von Piloty (1826 – 1886). Born in Munich Karl von Piloty was the foremost representative of the Realist style of painting in Germany.
