Original 9 7/8 inch x 7 7/8 inch Portrait of PHYLLIS CALVERT in the 1944 Anthony Asquith Drama FANNY BY GASLIGHT, based on the novel by Michael Sadleir.

Text on the reverse: PHYLLIS CALVERT plays the role of Fanny Hopwood, illegitimate daughter of a cabinet minister, Clive Seymore, grows up at “The Happy Warrior” a wine saloon-cum-nighthouse of the seventies run by her foster-father and mother. Her foster-father is killed in a brawl with the dissolute Lord Manderstoke (JAMES MASON) and when her mother dies , Fanny is sent to Seymore’s home in Belgravia to become a servant. From her real father she finally learns the facts of her birth and a strong , though secret affection develops between them. “FANNY BY GASLIGHT”, is a Gainsborough Production, and is produced by Edward Black mand directed by Anthony Asquith.
