Original 1781 11 1/8 inch x 16 1/8 inch Etching and Engraving titled FORTUNA

Allegorical figure of Fortune, flying over the globe, holding up a crown in one hand, a staff in the other, a cupid pulling on her hair and the veil thrown around her shoulders and hips.

Print by Francesco Pievillano & Vincenzo Dolcibene (1746 – 1820).

After the painting by Guido Reni (1575 – 1642). An Italian painter of the Baroque period, although his works showed a classical manner, similar to Simon Vouet, Nicholas Poussin and Philippe de Champaigne. He painted primarily religious works, but also mythological and allegorical subjects. Active in Rome, Naples, and his native Bologna, he became the dominant figure in the Bolognese School that emerged under the influence of the Carracci.

Inscription: Lettered below the image: “Guidus Rheni inven. et pinx. Vincentino Dolcibene del. Franciscus Pievillano Siculus sculp. 1781 Fortuna Hoec Tabula Guidi Rheni in Capitolio conservatur”

The etching is in very good condition with general age-related toning and minor defects from handling. Reverse side blank.
