In 1729 he was appointed a court painter to Augustus II, King of Poland. He was appointed Keeper of the Dresden Gallery in 1746, Professor of the Academy of Arts, Dresden in 1764 and also Director of the Painting School at the Meissen Porcelain Factory from 1764 to 1765. He created over 180 original etchings from 1728 to 1763, equally gifted in the genres of landscapes, figure studies and religious scenes and gaining a huge reputation in both France and Germany for his ability to etch subjects in a number of different styles.
