Betty Compson (1897 – 1974) was an American actress and film producer who got her start during Hollywood’s silent era. She is best known for her performances in “The Docks of New York” and “The Barker”, the latter of which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
The portrait is by Otto Dyar (1892 – 1988). Otto Dyar was a prominent stills photographer who began his career at the Paramount studios in the 1920s. Initially working as an assistant on major film productions such as the 1927 ‘Wings’, Dyar quickly rose through the ranks to become one of Hollywood’s most notable image-makers.
The portrait, with the photographer’s name stamped on the reverse, is in very good condition with a tiny tear in the right border.
