Original 1795 14 3/8 inch x 18 1/4 inch Etching and Engraving titled THE WOMAN WASHING JESUS’S FEET

A sinful woman kneeling before Christ, who sits at table at Bethany with Simon the pharisee and others, washing His feet with her tears, drying them with her hair, with jars of ointment beside her, while He quells their indignation.

Print by William Bromley (1769 – 1842). Painter, line engraver, etcher, occasional mezzotinter, and publisher; exhibited his engravings at the Royal Academy 1786-1842; father of John Charles, Frederick and Clough Bromley.

After the painting by William Hamilton (1751 – 1801). An English painter and illustrator.

Published by Thomas Macklin (1752/3 – 1800), Poets Gallery, Fleet Street

Inscription: Lettered below the image with the title, biblical reference ‘Vide John Ch. XII. v. 3. 4. 5.’ and ‘W. Hamilton R.A. Pinxt. / W. Bromley sculpt. / Publish’d May 16th. 1798, by Thos. Macklin, Poets Gallery, Fleet Street, London.’

The etching is in very good condition with slight foxing and general age-related toning and minor defects from handling.
