Father Pellegrin, parish priest of Sableuse, a village of about 2100 inhabitants, gives an old crucifix to a stranger presented by a former comrade in the war, La Goupille. He learns too late that he has been abused by a crook. Not wanting to compromise his friend La Goupille, the priest offers his bishop to find the crook and the crucifix himself. For this purpose, he swaps his cassock for civilian clothes… .
